دتکتور گاز دستگاه الکترونیکی است که برای تشخیص و اندازه‌گیری گازهای سمی، انفجاری و اشتعالی موجود در جو یک محیط، کاربرد دارد. این وسیله غلظت گازهای موجود در یک منطقه را پایش می‌کند و در صورتی که غلظت گاز به سطح خطرناک برسد، هشدار داده و ایمنی آن جو حفظ می‌شود. دتکتور های گاز در انواع ثابت، قابل حمل و خانگی به بازار عرضه می‌شوند. اساس کار دتکتور گاز به این صورت است که دستگاه با استفاده از سنسورهای حساس به گاز، تغییرات شیمیایی و فیزیکی را که به دلیل حضور گاز در محیط ایجاد می‌شود، تشخیص می‌دهد و با ارسال سیگنال به دستگاه کنترلی اعلام خطر می‌کند. در واقع، دتکتور‌ حساس به گاز هستند و با تشخیص تغییراتی در خصوصیات فیزیکی و شیمیایی سنسور خود، به عنوان واکنش‌گر عمل می‌کنند. این تغییرات می‌توانند شامل تغییر در ولتاژ، جریان الکتریکی، دما، نور و یا دیگر خصوصیات فیزیکی و شیمیایی سنسور باشند. سپس دستگاه با تحلیل این تغییرات، نوع گاز و مقدار آن را تشخیص می‌دهد و در صورت وجود گاز خطرناک، اعلام خطر می‌کند.

More recently, infrared imaging sensors have come into use. All of these sensors are used for a wide range of applications and can be found in industrial plants, refineries, pharmaceutical manufacturing, fumigation facilities, paper pulp mills, aircraft and shipbuilding facilities, hazmat operations, waste-water treatment facilities, vehicles, indoor air quality testing and homes.
